What approval he got was from meeting his father's expectations. Fred Trump Sr. wanted his sons to be ruthless "killers" like he was. Donald seemed successful on the surface, but under the thin veneer there was a wounded child. Donald's basic nature is sensitive and vengeful. His tactic became to strike back, to hide his weakness. We are disappointed daily by Donald J. Trump. There is no evidence of humanity or reason. We are left with the stark realization that Trump is just an animal in human form. There is no great strategy to his behavior, as some strive to find. He is living for what feels good in the moment. He lashes out when he is questioned and challenged. He says what makes him look good in the moment. Truth does not matter. Trump's appeal is to people's baser instincts: selfishness, racism, greed. We should remember that he ran for presidency as a vanity project. He let it all hang out, which some people thought was genuine and just what the country needed. But, he never ran to help other people. It was all about attention getting and parading in front of cameras. Now we are living with the appalling realization that he will let tens of thousands die because he sees no benefit to himself in helping them. Jesus said in John 14:6 : "I am the way and the truth and the life". In 2016 Trump said repeatedly : "I alone can fix it". Are there direct parallels between these statements? Is Trump making himself into a modern day messiah? Is he inspiring fervent devotion in his base? I think the answer is yes. Dr. Justin Frank M.D. on The Thom Hartmann Program identified this as "God complex", an unconscious delusion that he is invincible and omnipotent, which Trump actually believes. This is a break from reality and therefore psychotic. His base joins him in this delusion.   Since a substantial fraction of his base are Evangelicals, the jump from devotion to Jesus to Trump is not a far stretch.
