Unconventional Health Gurus: Mark Hyman and Dave Asprey

Mark Hyman, M.D. and Dave Asprey are present-day high priests of "biohacking". They practice what they preach by often making themselves guinea pigs for their health remedies. They have an international following, of which I have lately become a part. Who does not want to live a healthier and longer life? Well, millions of Americans who are eating the standard American diet (SAD) do not. Anyone who tries to take away their addictive junk food may be in for a bruising fight.

Mark Hyman and Dave Asprey, who have both personally dealt with serious illnesses, had to discover their own health solutions because conventional medicine could not help them. Hyman and Asprey researched nutrition and health on their own and learned to apply what seems to work. But, they are also drawn to the unusual, weird and unexplored. In astrological terms, they have very strong Uranus and, perhaps, Eris energies. They are not afraid of being different. If Astrology is correct, we would expect their natal charts to be similar. They are 13 years apart in age, they come from different backgrounds, yet their interests and careers converge. Their noon charts are shown together, with Hyman's chart in the inner circle and Asprey's planets on the outer circle. Immediately we can see that the majority of their planets are in the same signs. They predominantly share the same energies.

These similarities are shown in a table form below:

         Hyman                           Sign                       Asprey

Sun, Mars, Neptune            Scorpio              Sun, Mercury
Mercury, Jupiter                Sagittarius           Neptune
   Saturn                              Capricorn           Jupiter, N.Node
Venus, N.Node                       Libra               Mars, Uranus, Pluto
    Pluto                                   Virgo                    Venus
 Moon, Uranus                         Leo                      Moon

First, both these gentlemen are Sun sign Scorpios. With co-rulers Mars and Pluto, the sign of Scorpio is known for its intensity, penetration and transformation. Hyman and Asprey aim to transform health by investigating with thoroughness, penetration and passion. They rose triumphantly from the ashes of their debilitating illnesses.

Their planets in Sagittarius add a sense of adventure and exploration, as well as freedom and independence to follow a road less traveled. Capricorn brings the qualities of seriousness, pragmatism and caution. They are making sure that what they say works. Virgo, another Earth sign, gives focus and precision to their work. Libra enables them to engage easily with people. Leo qualities give them showmanship, drama and a certain exuberance. The mixture of these energies works well for them.

Hyman and Asprey also share a number of similar planetary aspects. These are shown in the table below:

              Hyman                                             Asprey

Mars square Uranus                               Mars conj. Uranus
Mars semisq. Saturn                               Mars trine Saturn
Mars square Chiron                                Mars opp. Chiron
Mars-Uranus-Chiron                              Mars-Uranus-Chiron
Jupiter square Pluto                                Jupiter square Pluto
Eris semisq. Chiron                                 Eris conj. Chiron

The Mars-Uranus stressful aspects indicate that Hyman and Asprey are likely to act out in unusual ways. There is a great deal of self-determination and will to do what they want. It is difficult to stop them once they make up their minds. Mars-Saturn aspects give endurance and determination, but could also lead to fluctuations in energy. Mars-Chiron aspects indicate bravery as well as compassion. There is assertiveness and a warrior attitude. Jupiter Pluto square indicates a great deal of power to push through difficult situations, almost to the point of fanaticism. Dwarf planet Eris seems to associate with sudden and shocking events. My guess is that the Eris-Chiron aspects in Hyman's and Asprey's charts relate to the fact that they are upsetting the status quo of medicine.
