Rod Rosenstein: Hero or Complicit

The role of Rod Rosenstein in the Mueller Investigation has grown in scrutiny as journalists report that he interacted with Trump in ways that question his impartiality. He reportedly agreed that the investigation was treating Trump unfairly and that he will see to it that Trump is treated better. He promised Trump that he will "land the plane", a phrase repeated by William Barr, likely signaling their cooperation with Trump. What can explain Rosenstein's strange behavior? Why compromise himself? Can Astrology shed any light? The Noon Chart for Rod Rosenstein is shown below. Although the Ascendant is unknown, we can still gain a lot of information from this chart.

At first glance we note the preponderance of Earth signs and a double Earth Grand Trine that includes Mars. With Sun, Mercury and Venus in Capricorn, Jupiter and Moon (likely) in Taurus, and Mars, Uranus and Pluto in Virgo, this is a man who defines himself in the reality of his career and social standing. The statement Rosenstein reportedly made that he did not want to be fired by a tweet indicates that he valued his career enough not to let it end by an ugly tweet by Trump. Twenty-nine years in the Justice Department is what Rosenstein had invested.

Some people have labelled Rosenstein as "weak". He certainly is not a match to Trump's aggressive Fire signs of Leo (Mars, Pluto, Ascendant) and Sagittarius (Moon). Rosenstein's Mars in Virgo is more suited to working diligently and patiently than at responding aggressively. With Saturn in Pisces it can be said that the individual "can be weak on hope and courage - moral and physical and can get weighed down by unconscious feelings of guilt and anxiety"(according to Roger Elliot). Chiron in Pisces has been described as "struggle to establish inner order as thoughts and ideas become confused and emotional responses to situations further confuse matters" (Parker's Astrology). Chiron at 1 degree opposition to Pluto has been described as "causing secrecy and the tendency to plot and scheme" (Parker's Astrology). Mercury sesqiquadrate Jupiter (0 degrees) can indicate likelihood of bluffing and deception. What emerges here is that Rosenstein is overwhelmed and confused as to how to handle Trump's aggression, but quite able to deceive.

Yet, Rosenstein did not want to sacrifice himself and resign or provoke being fired. What he achieved in the Justice Department mattered a lot. Astrologically this is supported by the Grand Trine with Sun-Jupiter as well as by Sun quincunx North Node. These aspects indicate a person who wants to be noted and successful. Rosenstein as Deputy Attorney General held the highest position of his career.

Rosenstein was willing to bend under the pressure of Trump and now William Barr. He was willing to bend so far as to praise Trump for his respect for the rule of law? The Mercury conjunction Venus (1 degree) has been described by R. Elliot as "flexible to the point of instability". The Moon makes an inconjunct aspect to Mercury-Venus, thus further increasing the emotional impact. Rosenstein has been pushed to his limits by Trump. It is apalling to think how many people have suffered in order to cover up Trump's misdeeds. But, did Rosenstein's presence as overseer ensure that Mueller completed the investigation, if the investigation was indeed complete and independent? Would Trump have appointed someone more corruptible to replace Rosenstein if Rosenstein resisted? What exactly did Rosenstein do behind the scenes? In time we will know.
