In early human history it made sense to look for protection and support from those related to us. It was a useful survival mechanism. But in the age of global culture it becomes less relevant. In a country of recent immigrants and as diverse as the US, it makes no realistic sense to advocate for separation. To blindly promote just those who are genetically similar to us overlooks qualities that are more positively and universally human. Yet there is a resurgence of White Supremacists and neo-Nazis, as if the particular shade of skin color really indicates anything of significance. What they would like to see is genocide. They are, in fact, willing to kill for the sake of their genes. This motivation seems to be hard-wired in some people who then find susceptible followers. If Cancer is the sign of family and clan, then we would expect the 5th Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan to be very Cancerian .  Most people were shocked at the unusually lenient sentence Judge Ellis gave to Paul Manafort. His statement that Manafort lived an "otherwise blameless life" left people baffled. What is going on in this judge's mind? He has been described as an arch conservative. The fact that he refuses to use email is an indication of his unwillingness to adapt. Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) was an American professor of literature and comparative mythology. He wrote several popular books and appeared on television. Campbell had a different take on the question of God. He skirted around the question, but in 1987 he replied: "I don't think you can call a person an atheist who believes in as many gods as I do." I am sure that many atheists would find this answer quite perplexing. That truth can't be boiled down to a simple "yes" or "no" answer speaks to a different approach. Many people who describe themselves as rational dismiss Astrology as superstition. It is very much in vogue to ridicule Astrology in scientific circles. But these same people who say that all evidence should be examined, never bother to examine astrological evidence. They point to the newspaper Astrology as their evidence. But Astrology is hardly that. These rational men, without much evidence, say that individual differences in human behavior are all due to genes. But the complexity of the human mind is far more than the genetic code. There is very important interplay with the environment, what we can and can't yet measure. Meanwhile, we can use Astrology to describe what people have observed about human nature for millennia, and appreciate this power. Some of the most ardent advocates for rational thought are atheists.
